Winning the Argument Isn’t the Same Thing as Being Right

Here’s something I found after running about 30 structured debate sessions and cataloguing roughly 50 of the most common logical fallacies people use. I was looking for patterns, you know, which fallacies showed up most, which ones did the most damage, which ones were hardest to catch in real time. And I found them, sure, I found all of that. But the thing that stopped me cold was something I wasn’t looking for at all, and it turned out to be bigger than anything I’d been tracking. The single most common error across all those sessions wasn’t any specific fallacy. It was the assumption that when you successfully identify a fallacy in someone’s argument, you’ve proven their conclusion is wrong. People were doing this constantly, and here’s the part that gets me, the people doing it were the best arguers in the room. The ones who’d done the reading. The ones who knew what an ad hominem was, what a straw man looked like, what a false dichotomy felt like. They could spot bad reasoning from across the table, and then they’d make exactly the same mistake every time: they’d assume the bad reasoning meant the bad conclusion.

It doesn’t. Let me tell you why this matters so much, and I’ll come back to the data in a minute, but first you have to sit with the actual logic of it. You can show me my argument is terrible. You can take it apart piece by piece, you can name every fallacy, you can expose every leap I made, and at the end of all that, my conclusion can still be correct. And the reverse is true, which is maybe even harder to accept: you can construct a perfectly valid, logically airtight argument for something that is completely false. The argument and the conclusion are separate things. The truth or falsehood of the conclusion doesn’t flow from the quality of the argument. This is what philosophers call the fallacy fallacy, the belief that a bad argument proves a bad conclusion, and once you see it you cannot stop seeing it, it’s everywhere.

I watch this play out in the classroom in a way that’s almost clinical, you know. A student will come up to the board and show a design that genuinely works. The composition is strong, the hierarchy is clear, the message lands, and I know it’s working because I’ve been looking at design for 25 years and my gut says it works and then I can reverse-engineer exactly why. So I ask them to walk me through their reasoning. And they’ll say something like, “I put the red here because red means passion.” And I have to take a breath, because no, that’s not why it works. It works because the red created contrast against the blue-gray background and that contrast drew the eye exactly where it needed to go. The passion theory is wrong. But here’s what I try to be precise about with students, and this is the thing most teachers don’t stop to say clearly: the wrong reasoning does not make the design wrong. Those are two different questions. The design is right. The reasoning is wrong. Both things are true at the same time, and if you collapse them in either direction you’re going to make bad decisions. You’re going to throw out work that’s good because you can’t explain it, or you’re going to keep work that’s broken because your explanation for it sounds solid.

And I see the same pattern at scale when I think about the creativity research, the longitudinal studies on divergent thinking that show 98% of children testing as creative geniuses at age five and by age 25 that number has dropped to 2%. I’ve watched that number do two things in the public conversation, and both of them are instructive. One camp looks at it and says schools destroy creativity, and they’re not wrong, I have 25 years of classroom evidence for the conditioning that happens, I’ve watched it happen in real time, I’ve watched curious, generative kids get trained into cautious, approval-seeking adults one grade at a time. But the other camp attacks the measurement, and they’re also not entirely wrong, the test is limited in what it measures, the operationalization of creativity is genuinely contested, and there are real methodological questions worth asking. And so both sides demolish each other’s arguments. The creativity camp has shaky evidence sometimes. The skeptics have real methodological points. And then both sides walk away thinking they’ve settled something about the underlying question. They haven’t. Demolishing the test doesn’t disprove the conditioning. Proving the conditioning doesn’t validate the test. The quality of the evidence and the truth of the phenomenon are still separate questions, they were always separate questions, and treating an argument like a direct window into reality is how you end up more confused after the debate than before it.

This is what makes most political argument not just useless but actively harmful to clear thinking, because it trains people to conflate two completely different activities. Finding the truth and winning the argument are not the same activity. They overlap sometimes, sure, a good argument made in good faith with strong evidence can absolutely point toward truth, but they are not the same thing, and optimizing for one will often actively undermine the other. When you’re in debate mode you’re looking for weakness in the other person’s reasoning, and when you find it you get a little neurological reward, a little hit of being right, and that reward is powerful enough that it can short-circuit the much harder question of whether the conclusion you’ve just “defeated” might still be correct. Most of the time we don’t even notice we’ve stopped asking that question.

You know, the students who get this fastest are usually the ones who’ve been burned by it personally, who’ve been in a critique where someone dismantled their rationale and they threw out the whole design, and then six months later they see a piece in the wild that’s doing the exact same thing they were doing and it’s working brilliantly and they get that sick feeling of recognition. Or they’re the ones who’ve been in an argument where they had every fact right and every logical step locked in and they still felt, in their gut, like something about their conclusion was off, and they couldn’t reconcile those two feelings. That dissonance is the beginning of real thinking, I think. The moment when you realize that being rigorous about argument and being rigorous about truth are both important and they require different tools.

So the next time you’re in an argument, or reading one, or watching one play out on the internet where someone is very confidently demolishing the other person’s reasoning, it’s worth asking the quieter question underneath all the noise. Okay, their argument is bad. We’ve established that. But what about the thing they were actually trying to say? Is that true? Because those are different questions, and the second one is the one that actually matters, and it’s the one that almost nobody is asking…
