Exercise 12 of 20 from the Playing With Purpose Student Edition
From Book 6: The Voice (Exercises in Authenticity)
The Parable
A young musician who was afraid wrote a letter to herself one year in the future. In it, she asked: What will you have become? What will you have dared? In the letter, she imagined her future self looking back. She imagined what that future self would say to her present self. A year later, she opened the letter. She had done almost everything she asked. Not because the letter had magic. But because once she had articulated the voice she was becoming, she began to move toward it. The voice you are becoming is not far away. It is just the voice you are now, one choice ahead.
This final exercise is not an ending. It is a bridge. From declaration to conversation. From ‘I have found my voice’ to ‘I am ready to use my voice.’ Book 7 begins on the other side.
The Exercise
Write a letter to your voice one year from now. Not your physical self. Your creative voice. Address it as if it is a real being you are speaking to across time.
What has that future voice done? What has it dared? What has it created? What has it learned? What has it become? Write as if you know for certain that these things have happened.
Now write from that future voice’s perspective. What does that voice want to tell you right now? What does it know that you do not? What does it want you to understand about the journey that is coming?
Seal the letter or keep it somewhere you will see it. This is your commitment to the voice you are becoming.
Reflection Questions
1. Who will my voice become?
2. What does my voice want me to know?
3. What is the one thing I need to do this week to become that voice?
What We Were Trying to Do
Your voice is not static. It is becoming. Every exercise in this book has been preparation for becoming.
The voice you are becoming already exists. You are simply moving toward it.
Why It Matters
This is the bridge between Book 6 and Book 7. You have declared your voice. Now you must use it. And you cannot use it alone.
A voice that does not enter conversation is a voice that dies. Book 7 is where your voice meets other voices. This letter is your promise to bring it.
References & Further Reading
This practice draws from future-pacing and visioning work in psychology and coaching traditions.
Going Further
Your future voice has already survived the year you have not yet lived. Trust it.
Notice: Everything in this letter is possible. Nothing in this letter is wish. It is vision.
Your Voice Is Yours
You have found your voice. Not the voice your parents thought you should have. Not the voice your critics believe you lack. Not the voice of the person you thought you were supposed to become. But the voice you have built through showing up, through failing, through courage, through practice, through choosing honesty over comfort.
This voice is yours. And a voice alone is a monologue. You have listened to yourself. You have spoken to yourself. You have declared yourself. Now your voice enters the world as conversation. It meets other voices. It changes. It grows. It becomes part of something larger than itself.
Everything you have practiced has led here. The permission. The curiosity. The habit. The courage. The skill. The declaration. Now comes the collaboration, the conversation, the room where your voice meets the voices of others and something new emerges.
