Here’s what I’ve been watching happen since late 2025: I load a problem into my brain before the treadmill session, something I’ve been stuck on or something that’s been sitting unresolved, and then I run for 90 to 120 minutes and I don’t think about it during the workout, the running just becomes a mechanical rhythm that quiets the part of my brain that evaluates and second-guesses and holds back, and somewhere near the end of the session when my thinking has shifted into a different state entirely, something arrives that I didn’t generate consciously and that I couldn’t have generated from the desk. I keep my phone nearby and I voice-dictate whatever comes up, and the pattern is consistent: load the problem, let it rest while you move, capture what arrives in the different state.

What I’m watching is the classical separation between what research calls preparation and incubation and illumination, and for 25 years I’ve been telling students the same thing: your best work won’t happen while you’re staring at the screen and struggling, it’ll happen in the shower or in the car or falling asleep or on a walk, the work will happen somewhere else while your conscious brain is occupied with something else. Most students don’t believe this because they’re used to deadline pressure producing work, and they assume the pressure is what generated it, when actually what generated it was the weeks of work and thinking and failure that happened before the 2 a.m. session where they suddenly had a breakthrough.

The screen is where you execute; generation happens somewhere else, and most design education completely misses this because it’s built around critique and output and the visible work that happens in the studio, and it completely ignores the invisible work that has to happen before anything visible can happen. Research puts numbers on what I’ve been observing empirically for three decades: 98 percent creative genius at five, 2 percent at 25, and the mechanism isn’t loss, it’s interference, the evaluator in your brain getting louder and more powerful as you get older and starting to shut down generation before it can produce anything surprising. The exercises I’ve built are designed to separate those two functions: generate first, evaluate later, never at the same time, because the moment you combine them, the evaluator wins and generation stops.

What the treadmill taught me is that this separation requires more than just intention; it requires a state change, a physical shift that actually quiets the evaluating part of the brain. Running does that for me. For some people it’s swimming or walking or any repetitive physical work that has a rhythm to it, something mechanical enough that the thinking brain can go quiet while the body does the work. Different people need different priming. Some people get it from music, some from silence, some from being in a crowd, some from being alone, but the important part is the state change, not the specific method.

Once you understand this, the whole way you structure creative work changes, because you stop treating the desk as the place where creativity happens and you start treating it as the place where you capture what creativity produces somewhere else. The desk is execution. The shower is generation. The walk is where the solution arrives. Most people never make that distinction clear in their own practice and they never teach it clearly to their students, so students think they’re supposed to be creative at the keyboard and they can’t figure out why it’s not working, and they get more and more frustrated and they push harder and the harder they push the more the evaluator tightens and the less generation happens.

This is why the daily treadmill sessions became non-negotiable for me, not just for managing the bipolar, though that’s real and that’s part of it, but for accessing the state where thinking can happen differently. The physical exertion creates something like a hypnotic state, a theta wave state maybe, the kind of state where generation happens without the interference of the evaluator, and if I’m not getting into that state regularly, my work suffers because I’m never getting out of the evaluating mind into the generating mind. The exercise isn’t optional and it isn’t just for health; it’s part of the creative process itself.

What I’m learning from watching this happen consistently is that we’ve completely mismeasured what creative work is and how it works. We treat generation as the activity, the visible work, the time you spend making something, and we ignore the preparation and incubation that happens invisibly, and then we wonder why our output is mediocre. If you want better output, you don’t optimize the generation phase; you optimize the preparation and incubation phases and you build a life and a practice that gives you access to the state where illumination can happen.

That’s the thing that nobody talks about when they talk about creativity, and it’s the thing that would actually change education if it was taken seriously. You don’t learn to be creative by spending more time at the screen; you learn by building a life that regularly takes you into the states where generation happens, the states where the evaluator goes quiet and the brain moves sideways and connections form that wouldn’t form in the linear evaluating mind. That’s where the real work is, and it has nothing to do with screens and everything to do with understanding your own brain well enough to know what quiets the evaluator and what amplifies it.
